Why headlights turn yellow — and why polish is not enough

Most modern headlights are polycarbonate — a clear plastic with a factory UV clear coat. That coat is thin. Years of sun, heat, road grit, and car-wash chemicals chew it up. Once it fails, the plastic itself oxidizes. The lens turns yellow, chalky, and pitted. That is not a film you can wipe off.

The cosmetic part is what people notice first. The optical part is the actual problem. Oxidized plastic is no longer a smooth window. It is a frosted surface. Light from the bulb or projector hits that texture and scatters. You lose distance down the road and pick up glare in rain and oncoming traffic.

Why a store polish fades back

A kit from the parts aisle usually sands lightly or compounds the surface, then leaves a thin wipe-on coat. That can look clear for a few days. It has not removed the damaged layer, and it has not put a real UV barrier back on the plastic. The same sun that yellowed the lens the first time yellows it again — often faster, because the factory coat is already gone.

A restoration that lasts is a cut, not a wipe. Wet sanding removes the oxidized polycarbonate. Polish brings the surface back to optical clear. A UV ceramic seal replaces the factory protection so the new surface is not sitting naked in the sun.

What yellow lamps are telling you

• The beam looks like a glow in front of the bumper instead of a tight cutoff on the pavement.
• Night rain is worse than it used to be — scatter plus water on the lens.
• The front of the car photographs tired even after a wash.
• One side is worse if it takes more sun in the driveway.
