Why store-bought headlight kits fade back

The kit is a weekend. The sun is every day. Without a UV ceramic seal, oxidized plastic yellows again — often faster than the first time.

Store kits sell a satisfying before-and-after. Sand a little, compound, wipe on a liquid, take a photo. The lens looks better in the driveway. Two or three weeks of outdoor parking later, the yellow creeps back. That is not you doing it wrong. That is the product stopping at cosmetics.

What the kit leaves undone

  • It rarely cuts deep enough to remove the pitted, oxidized layer.
  • The wipe-on coat is thin and not a ceramic UV barrier.
  • It does not replace the factory clear that already failed.
  • Once that factory coat is gone, every sunny day is working on bare plastic.

Professional restoration is slower on purpose. We mask the paint, wet-sand through the damaged polycarbonate, polish to optical clear, and lock the new surface under a UV ceramic coat. The coat is the job. Clarity without it is a demo, not a repair.

When a kit is not even the right tool

If the lens is chalk-white, deeply pitted, or one side is much worse than the other, a kit will shine the peaks and leave the valleys hazy. Heavy oxidation needs more grit, more time, and a seal that can actually hold. Cracks, moisture inside the housing, or broken tabs are not a restoration at all — those need a new assembly.
